Rock n Roll Marathon Weekend Recap

You know that feeling of accomplishment when you finally do something that you never really thought you would do?
For me, this past Sunday I ran the Rock n Roll New Orleans
MARATHON.
Yes that's right I joined the crazy people that wake up one morning and decide to run/walk/crawl 26.2 miles.
Surprisingly, I was not that nervous about running 26.2 miles. I guess from me running so many races, I went in with the "its just another race" attitude and I think that helped.
So let me tell you about the weekend.
Friday morning  my bff Jennifer and I left early so that we could get to New Orleans by lunch time to work at the expo. She was working for the Spartan booth and I was working for the Womans Half Marathon booth and Gulf Coast Half series booth.
If you haven't heard of either one of these races check them out. The Gulf Coast Half series next race is on April 7th in Pensacola Beach. I will be there come run with me.
Anyways after working at the expo we picked up our race packets.
and took a few goofy pictures.

I look forward to these pictures at every Rock n Roll race. They always have a ton of picture opportunities. After getting our race package, we picked up our tshirt and swag bag. I love the tech shirts this year.
We decided to go eat at our favorite restaurant The Louisiana Pizza Kitchen for dinner. As most of you know I am on a 40 day Paleo challenge, so I didn't have my normal grilled chicken pizza. I ordered a tomato salad and special order seafood gumbo. It was so good.
I had been sick all week with bronchitis, so we went back to the hotel and went to bed.
Jennifer had to work the Brooks booth on Saturday morning, so I stayed in bed pretty much all day resting up, hydrating, and taking medicine to feel better for Sunday.
I did get up and meet up with Jennifer for some shopping at the Riverwalk. It was very tempting to sail away for a week or 2. Who needs 26.2 miles of running when you have Royal Caribbean at your disposal? lol! We could have been stow aways or something. HEEHEE!
After shopping we met Melanie and her husband and some other friends for dinner at WOW. I was able to order some sweet potato fries to carb load. I have been doing some research on Paleo carb loading for running. Sweet potatoes were the number 1 suggestion. So I ordered some to go for race morning also.  Jennifers bff Melissa came in town to cheer us on Saturday night. It was nice to have someone there to take care of our stuff on Sunday morning. I was very grateful she was there. I took my gear picture and went to sleep!
On Sunday morning I woke up feeling pretty good. The weather was perfect. Jennifer and I lined up at the start line.
When you are running a race with 18000+ people, you would think it would be chaotic and crazy, however the Rock n Roll group manages to keep it very organized and easy to figure out. They have different corrals that each runner is in. We were in corral 15, so You just find your number and get in the group.
Jennifer and I started our 26.2 mile journey around 7:22am.
I am going to recap my actual race tomorrow. A lot of things go through your mind in a 26 mile run. I was doing this race as a way of telling my self I could do it and also prove that a paleo/CrossFit/runner could finish a marathon without a lot of LSD/long distance training. Guess what?
It worked!

Stay Tuned...

  1. I am so excited to read you race recap. I absolutely believe a Crossfit athlete can kick butt in a marathon without the long runs and I am curious to read how it felt for you. If I have learned anything this past year is that cross training (whatever you can work hard at) is an amazing substitute for running and really has made me a better runner. Congrats marathoner!!!!

  3. Alright MARATHONER, I've taken to stalking your blog until your put up the recap. I'm glad I did stalk your blog because it looks like my first comment didn't post (user error, probably my phone). So here's the basically what I said - lol:

Gaaaaaaaaah I'm so proud of you!! It's crazy to me that you ran a marathon with little training. That just goes to show you why weight lifting is SOOOOO critical for runners. I've been wanting to do crossfit for months now and I'm excited to get into it in April - yay!! (Classes were closed for March. boo.) Oh well, don't keep us hanging to long with the recap!
